Everyone thinks you have to do things at the “appropriate age” and you don't. Thanks for showing us you can be who you are and allow everything to unfold in due season.

Good to know that there are others, too. I got my driving license in my forties! 😎 And since then I’ve been driving a 4x4 Defender, offroading, doing all kinds of crazy fun stuff while I’ve been overlanding in Africa. 😃 Van life at its best — I love it!

Both Gilberts are cute! Thanks for such an entertaining story! Why is it when people teach you how to drive, it involves a lot of yelling? lol I endured that too when my mom taught me how to drive automatic and then manual.

I have a shih tzu too and they are so good at the side eye....lol. Love shih tzus, they are the best dogs!

Glad you got to your destination safely! Thanks again for the great story!

Thank you so much for reading and your kind words. It’s true about the driving & teaching. There’s always yelling haha.

I absolutely love that you have a shih tzu. They are the best.

Lovely read and I can totally relate. I’ve driven an automatic all over since the age of sixteen and now am on a mission to learn and feel comfortable driving a manual in a busy city. Learning how to drive a manual is a great metaphor for life im realizing.

I actually miss the manual (although not on hills at a red light!). Once you get the hang of it, it’s super fun and you’ll never want to drive an auto again.

Awesome story - it’s amazing what support a jet black side eye from a trusty four legged friend does for comfort!

Silently judging with the side eye. But also the most loving little dogs. 💗

oh that's what makes the side eye the best, so much love in them!!! (as I received my own side eye while I prioritize the keyboard instead of scratching behind someones ears....). Great, story!

Cannot TELL you how much I love this. For so many reasons. For the beauty and honesty with which it's written, for the Gilberts, for your courage – and also, perhaps mostly, for a gentle reminder to never take anything for granted. I got my licence the first moment the law allowed it, and have been driving confidently ever since. I've usually taken for granted the freedom this has afforded me – but, never again. I think driving on the freeway will now always remind me of you. And of Gilbert Lopez The First. "You can't spend your whole life in second gear, babe." Wise, wise words <3

Narina thank you so much for reading and these words 😭 Made my morning to read your comment. I have driven so much now that I sometimes forget my humble roots and how far I’ve come. It’s easy to take the daily stuff for granted. Now I’m as chill as Gilbert Lopez when I merge onto the highway 😎

I absolutely loved reading this! You’ve always had so much more strength and courage than you realize. I have so many great memories of driving you around Fort Lame, from our high school days and beyond. I’ll never forget picking you up from the airport and you immediately requesting the Spice Girls, or that one time you were scanning radio stations, and when it stopped on a religious station, you exclaimed, “Oh, I know this one!” and cranked up “Our God is an Awesome God,” complete with hand gestures and all. I could keep going with stories like these!

The Gilberts! I never knew you couldn't drive. I still can't drive a stick. You'll have to teach me.

I kept that info top secret! 🤫 Miss you Patty 💗

Hmmm I remember the first time I saw the Rockies driving West on I-80. Spectacular.

Omg that last picture. That’s the hotel in Denver!! And the beginning of our adventurous pandemic days! I remember the drive to Taos. We stopped at a gas station and you asked me if i wanted to drive - and i was terrified and said no. Now im a driver too. The west will do that to you. Love this story and the memories it brings. 🩷

😂 I don’t remember asking you to drive. That’s so funny. I was probably thinking I deserved a break!
