Are you familiar with the concept of a sit-spot? It’s a naturalist practice where you pick a spot in nature and steward it with your attention through the seasons. Maybe you sketch while you are there, or maybe you just observe quietly, but over time you will become intimate with everything that lives and travels through the realm of your sit spot. All of the patterns and habits and events that may otherwise go unwitnessed by any other human.
I like to apply the concept of sit spots to the bastardized, unholy places of the world, too. Namely, the parking lots of the fast food restaurants of America. I sometimes indulge in a large fry at McDonald’s, take it back to my van, and sit in the parking lot for an hour just watching the humanity float around like I’m at the aquarium.
Somewhere in Michigan, I once walked into a McDonald’s to get my special treat. Right when I walked in, I slipped and almost fell on a sopping wet floor.…
